About Virgilio Viana

An internationally recognized expert in Forestry & Sustainable Development, Dr. Viana received his Forestry degree from the University of São Paolo/ESALQ, his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University and conducted post-doctoral work on sustainable development at the University of Florida. Dr. Viana was the founder and President of IMAFLORA, the first forest certifier based in Latin America. He also participated in the process of structuring a number of institutions such as the Center for International Research and the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund. He was President of the Brazilian Society of Ethnoecology, President of São Paulo Forester's Association, Vice President of the Association of Brazilian State Secretaries of Environment and the first Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development for the State of Amazonas, amongst several other positions. He has also served as a consultant to a number of institutions including the World Bank, CIFOR, WWF and Greenpeace.
