Research

Initially, IDN-sponsored research will highlight the geographical region of sub-Saharan Africa. This region has been characterized as the "poorest" in the world on the basis of multiple indicators of poverty. It is also a region where Emory faculty in multiple fields ranging from public health and medicine to anthropology and history have long and distinguished records of research engagement. Our NGO partners are also active in the region. While sub-Saharan Africa will be the initial regional priority, IDN will foster an environment in which comparative knowledge is valued.

With this in mind, the IDN Academic Board has made a commitment to understanding the structural causes of poverty and marginalization, and to focusing on the experiences of poverty and development from below.. Following from this, the following research areas are of particular interest:

  • The structure of institutions and laws that shape people's abilities to claim their human rights
  • The social and cultural dimensions of poverty and development
  • The gendered dimensions of poverty
  • Capacity and Sustainability
IDN issued its first request for proposals in December 2007. Letters of intent will be accepted up to January 22, 2008. More information about applying for funding.
